The queen of celebrity ‘crowns’ brings her mane talent to Miami

For most people, launching a new business — particularly a beauty salon, amid a pandemic would seem like a bad idea. Not for hair guru and Marie Robinson, a renowned New York stylist with a client roster as exclusive as the MET gala invite list. Last December, Robinson expanded her beauty empire by taking her talents south and opening up her eponymous location at Aventura Mall, which was looking to add an high-end hair styling space to its list of retail brands.

Currently splitting her time between New York City’s flagship salon and the Magic City, Robinson says the choice to head to South Florida was a no-brainer. “We had some great colorists and stylists who wanted to relocate. We wanted to expand, and a lot of our clients were already moving to Miami,” she says, “Aventura Mall approached us as they were looking to fill the high-end gap. What I liked about it is that it is centrally located between Miami-Dade and Broward counties, making it accessible to both.”

Lauded by industry insiders for creating Michelle Williams’ bombshell blonde color in My Week With Marilyn as well as the actress’ campaign for Louis Vuitton, Robinson also took ginger beauty Emma Stone from fiery red to baby blonde, styled Jennifer Lawrence’s waves for Dior ads, and is the exclusive colorist for Anne Hathaway. “The great thing about us is that when celebrities of this caliber are in our space, they are totally anonymous, and we do not treat them any differently than all of our wonderful clients,” she says.

Non-celebrity clients at the Aventura spot can expect the same kind of detailed attention and care for their locks. The minimalist aesthetic — sleek and decorated with colorful artwork handpicked by Robinson and her husband, Abel — complements the relaxing, laid-back space where the focus can remain on the task at hand: supermodel-worthy hair. Services range from cuts to highlights and color correction. Those looking to add a new tone to their locks can book an appointment with any of her top stylists or even with Robinson herself during one of her sojourns to South Florida. But first, make sure to have snapshots handy. Robinson requests inspiration images prior to booking an appointment to get a feel for each client’s personality and needs — something she learned the importance of while working at NYC’s famed beauty mecca John Freida under the tutelage of another Hollywood lock-star, Danilo (responsible for Gwen Stefani’s impeccable platinum blonde, among others).

“I would take care of his clients, he trusted me blindly because intuitively, I had a good eye for color” she remembers. “I was doing so many makeovers and color changes on models like Caroline Murphy, Eva Herzigova, and Esther Cañadas.” It was during this time that her career catapulted, and after spending years building other celebrity stylists’ business’, she made the leap to build her own brand with her husband/business partner right at her side.

“Abel gets it. He just has the best eye. I am fascinated by what he brings to the space in New York and the new one in Aventura. He even designs the furniture!”

The events of 2020 haven’t halted the success of the salon, as Robinson remained in Miami through June to see clients and ensure that each person left feeling like the celebrities she has spent decades making beautiful. “Hair represents a big part of our identity,” says Robinson, “we aim to make sure every client walks out looking and feeling like the best version of themselves.”
