Lady Gaga Ends Awards Season on a High Note

Gaga’s take on the concept came courtesy of Ralph Lauren, who created the “liquid lamé” tuxedo jumpsuit for the star’s Jazz & Piano residency at Las Vegas’s MGM Grand in 2019. Intended for the show’s finale, Gaga originally wore the look while singing ‘New York, New York’ the theme of Minnelli’s 1977 musical of the same name directed by Martin Scorsese. While it’s rare for the ever-evolving star to re-wear an outfit Gaga’s tux was a beautiful tribute to Minnelli. Naturally, she tailored the piece to occasion, removing the detachable organza and tulle skirt which featured thousands of Swarovski crystals and opting to wear the suiting by itself. 

Subtlety has been Gaga’s forte of late. Named Harvard University’s Artist of the Year award a day earlier, she accepted the honor virtually in a simple olive double-breasted blazer and coordinated cream blouse. Her Oscars look was elevated, but it adhered to the same principles. Though far from casual—this is Gaga after all—the tuxedo was elegant, not ostentatious. Dolled up in Tiffany & Co. gems, a classic coif, and understated makeup, she was at her best and let her shine without taking attention away from the event’s focus. 

Of course, it wouldn’t be Gaga without an outfit change and hours earlier she headed out to host Elton John’s Oscar party in an ethereal look from Rodarté. In keeping with the spirit of John’s legendarily outré style and decades of Oscar night revelry Gaga went full glam in the ultra-feminine tulle specially for the festivities, further proof she’s one of the most exciting fashion icons on the planet.
