County Durham hotel spa named best in Western Europe and Scandinavia at World Spa & Wellness Awards
The North East has some of the best walks in the country, most beautiful villages and top beaches in Europe.
And if they’re not enough reasons to enjoy a staycation up here, our region now has one of Europe’s best spas too. The Serenity Spa at Seaham Hall Hotel in County Durham has been awarded the Hotel Spa of the Year: Western Europe and Scandinavia at the World Spa & Wellness Awards at a ceremony held in London on Sunday night (April 3).
It’s the best anniversary present that the hotel could have hoped for ahead of the spa’s twentieth anniversary this year. With its philosophy driven by seeking to help all spa visitors achieve fitness and wellbeing, there is a range of facilities and treatments which are aimed at promoting a healthy mind and body.

The 44,000ft spa is connected to the hotel by a subterranean walkway, which transports guests to a 20-metre pool with massage stations, outdoor Zen garden and Jacuzzis, a herbal sanarium, salt sauna and Eucalyptus steam room. There are also outdoor classes in the fresh sea air among the grounds of the 37-acre grounds, which overlook the Durham Heritage Coast.
Amanda Hardy, Manager of Seaham Hall’s Serenity Spa, said: “We are absolutely over the moon to have won this award. It is a fantastic achievement for the hotel to have been given such a notable accolade, which truly recognises the continued commitment that our team devotes to making a difference in the world of wellness and beauty.
“I would like to thank everyone at Seaham Hall – we did it!”
The Serenity Spa was shortlisted alongside some of the most admired hotel spas, including London’s Bulgari Spa, The Spa at the Mandarin Oriental and Espa Life at the Corinthia Hotel. And after a panel of 40 judges had weighed in with their opinions, the winners were announced aboard The Silver Sturgeon which passed many of London’s landmarks on a journey down the Thames.
Ross Grieve, Managing Director of Seaham Hall, said: “We are truly honoured to be recognised for this prestigious award on the world spa stage. It couldn’t have been achieved without the immensely hard work of the entire team and their ongoing commitment to delivering the very best service to our guests, that continuously goes above and beyond expectations.”
Both Seaham Hall and its spa have been in the spotlight several times in recent months. Manager Amanda Hardy took the Hotel Catey 2021 for Spa Professional of the Year, while the Spa itself was named Best Spa in the North East in the Good Spa Guide 2021 and has retained its 5-Bubble Luxury Spa status since 2016.
It was also named one of the best UK spa breaks by Guardian Travel, alongside the Morritt Hotel & Garage Spa near Barnard Castle. And to top it all off, the entire hotel won Best Small Hotel at the North East Tourism Awards in a glamourous awards ceremony at Newcastle’s Civic Centre at the end of March.
With plenty to celebrate on its 20th anniversary, Seaham Hall Serenity Spa plans to host a summer garden part for its members alongside launching a range of special offers. For more information, visit the website.
