Car crashes into beauty salon Thursday morning in southwest Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – No serious injuries were reported Thursday morning when a sport utility vehicle crashed through the front door of a beauty salon in southwest Topeka.

The crash was reported around 10 a.m. at the I.H.S. salon at 5642 S.W. 29th in the Barrington Village shopping center.

Police at the scene said a GMC Acadia SUV went up and over a curb in front of the business before crashing through the front door.

Two people inside the front of the salon were reported to have suffered injuries not believed to be serious.

Jody Roberts, the salon’s owner, said a customer and a hairdresser who were inside the salon were “thrown” several feet after the SUV crashed into the building.

Roberts said the customer, a man, was taken to a local hospital by American Medical Response ambulance for treatment.

The hairdresser didn’t require immediate treatment at the hospital, Roberts said.

In addition to crashing through the salon’s front door, the SUV appeared to have taken out a wooden post that helped support an awning over the concrete walkway along the front of businesses that face south in the shopping center.

By around 11 a.m. Thursday, a large plastic sheet had been placed over the front door area where the SUV hit the building.

In spite of the crash, the salon remained open for business Thursday afternoon. Roberts said customers were able to use the back door to the shop. A new front door was to be installed later in the day on Thursday or on Friday.

An employee of a nearby business told 13 NEWS that a similar incident in which a vehicle struck the building occurred recently in the same area as Thursday’s crash.

American Medical Response ambulance, in addition to the Topeka Fire Department, responded to the scene.
